A Calling Rooted in Belonging
For Hawkins, the path to education began with her own experiences as a student. “I had an amazing group of educators growing up that acted not only as educators for me but the biggest support system I had,” she shares. “School was my safe place.”
That sense of safety and belonging became the foundation of her purpose as an educator. Today, she strives to recreate that environment for her own students—one where they feel seen, supported, and encouraged to grow into confident, capable individuals. Her mission is clear: to give back to her community in the same way it once poured into her by teaching and loving some of Tennessee’s youngest learners.
Experience Across Grade Levels
Throughout her career, Ms. Hawkins has served in three different schools and taught across multiple early childhood settings, including K-2 RTI, second grade, and kindergarten.
Each experience has shaped her understanding of student development in unique ways.
“I learned SO MUCH in RTI,” she reflects. “Every role has helped me grow as an educator.” Now in kindergarten, she finds joy in witnessing some of the most remarkable academic and personal growth in education.
The Beauty of Kindergarten Growth
When asked about her favorite part of being a Tennessee educator, Hawkins doesn’t hesitate. “My favorite part of being an educator is loving the students and watching them grow.” Kindergarten, in particular, holds a special place in her heart. The transformation she witnesses each year is both humbling and inspiring.
“They come in missing mom and leave being SO independent. The gains are so worth it.” One of her most meaningful reflections comes from watching year-long growth unfold before her eyes: “Some students aren’t even able to sit in their chair in August, but by May they’re reading so quickly you can’t keep up. That’s my most memorable moment every year.”
Building Relationships That Last
Ms. Hawkins’ approach to education is grounded in one essential belief: relationships come first. She credits early mentorship from a veteran teacher for shaping her understanding of classroom success. “When you build rapport with the family and student right away, it really helps with all the challenges throughout the year.”
Working with students from diverse backgrounds has reinforced a lesson she carries into every classroom she enters: “They all want to feel special and loved no matter who or where they came from.” Because of this, she is intentional about creating a classroom where every child feels heard, valued, and encouraged to try their best each day. “I always tell them to try their best. Mistakes happen—we have life lessons daily.”
Navigating Challenges with Support and Patience
Like many educators, Ms. Hawkins has faced challenges in the area of behavior support. However, she emphasizes the importance of collaboration and administrative support in overcoming those challenges. “My administrative team along with the district has worked really hard on supporting the students and teachers who struggle with this aspect of teaching.” Through it all, she remains committed to growth and patience. “I believe every year is getting better with support. Patience is key.”
A Journey of Faith and Unimaginable Grace
Beyond the classroom, Hawkins’ story is one of extraordinary strength and faith. During her second year of teaching, she made the life-changing decision to take in a newborn baby. Balancing the demands of a new teacher while caring for an infant was a challenge unlike any other.
Looking back, she sees it as nothing short of grace. “God’s grace is the only thing that kept me going. He knew she and I needed each other.” What began as a moment of compassion has since become a permanent part of her life. “This year, two years later, I officially adopted her.”
Today, she spends her summers cherishing time with her daughter and embracing the season of motherhood alongside her teaching journey.
Faith as a Foundation
Hawkins leans on her faith as a guiding force in both life and education. One of her favorite scriptures, Philippians 4:13, continues to ground her in every season: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Advice for New Educators
For those just beginning their teaching careers, Ms. Hawkins offers encouragement rooted in experience: “Stay growing and learning from your colleagues and administrators. Ask for assistance anytime you need it. Do not feel like a failure or weak. You got this!” Her message is a reminder that teaching is a journey best traveled with humility, support, and a willingness to grow.

Candace Hawkins earned two years of tuition-free education at Roane State Community College before continuing her studies at Tennessee Technological University, where she received her Bachelor’s degree in K–5 Elementary Education. She currently teaches Kindergarten in East Tennessee. As a lifelong learner, Candace is currently exploring options for pursuing a master’s degree and considering the path that best aligns with her passions and goals.
Outside of her professional life, her greatest joy is being a mother to her daughter, Willow, whom she describes as one of God’s greatest blessings. Together, they embrace adventure, spending time outdoors, exploring new places, and enjoying any activity involving water. On quieter days, they can often be found sharing a delicious meal and getting lost in a good book. Candace values the simple things in life and finds fulfillment in the everyday moments that make family, learning, and connection so meaningful.
